CHRISTINE’S CORNER by Christine Pace: Thank you to so many readers who have expressed your delight in my “Christine’s Corner” and my other contributions over the years! Although anyone can send things in to Linda Packer Young, lead correspondent of the Cedar Mountain News, few do. Patty Stahl contributes great historical articles from time to time, which is really helpful to newcomers, and old. These stories; not fiction, are so exciting! Thank you Patty! (Patty is/was my late husband’s “favorite” niece). As of the last week in September I will no longer be an official co-correspondent (with Linda) of the popular Cedar Mountain News. Our News column is read throughout the county, as well as afar! Some have written to say they read the Cedar Mountain News first, every week, even though they don’t live here. Before me there was Ruby Skerrett, and Eugenia Graff, and Mrs. Pratt; then Linda Young took over. These are the columnists I knew & loved. They loved Cedar Mountain too, as much as I do. Now though it's time for me to continue on my quest to publish "my" stories (via my grandfather) about the "Kingdom of the Happy Land" in Henderson County, before it's lost for good. If you Google Happy Land or Kingdom of (the) Happy Land, which occurred following the freeing of the slaves, you'll see my grandfather & great grandfathers mentioned, respectively: Philip Jackson Jones and Dr./Capt. Levi Jones. (Levi, along with Thomas Edison discovered a Zircon mine on Levi's property(now Lake Summit in Tuxedo), which caused the neighboring town's name of Zirconia. My grandfather was born in the 1890’s and lived to almost 97, still clear in mind & body! Yet I was born when my parents were approaching their 40’s which made me the youngest of all my cousins. Therefore I was able to spend lots of quality time with my grandfather who loved to tell stories of him growing up next to what became known as the Kingdom of the Happy Land, whose “kingdom” lasted over 20 years, and grew in population of over 200! Yet few remember ever hearing about it now. And though having a few articles and even a pamphlet written (in 1945) it’s been a long time forgotten. I started my writing several year’s ago, and was about to look up archives and interviews the late Louise Bailey, author of “Along The Ridges”, wrote for the Hendersonville Times-News, when Covid struck. I’m just now ready to continue with my story; being encouraged by friends & relatives. I may send in something interesting for publication in the Cedar Mountain News from time to time; hope you will too! In my final salute I want to ask one favor: If any of you, the readers of this column, have ever heard of the “Kingdom Of The Happy Land” will you kindly contact me? (Christine Pace) by phone (828)556-5238 or email: chris_p_artist@yahoo.com Thank you and God Bless you all.
