STUDIO 276 HOLIDAY MARKET by Sarah Dearbaugh

The Cedar Mountain Holiday Market was an absolute success this past Sunday! It felt like stepping into a scene straight out of a Christmas Hallmark movie – beautifully decorated booths, a crackling fire pit, hot chocolate and fresh-cut trees near a winter wonderland set for a jolly ‘ol elf!

A huge thank you to everyone who braved the chilly December weather to support our talented vendors. By choosing to shop locally, you not only got to meet the makers and support small businesses, but you also helped keep Cedar Mountain thriving after a challenging hurricane season.

We’d also like to extend our deepest gratitude to Earthshine Nature Pod for providing free internet and capturing these amazing drone shots of our biggest market yet! Originally, half of the event was planned to be indoors at the Community Center. When the building flooded and needed repairs, we quickly adjusted and opened our parking lot into additional market space rather than canceling. The result? A festive, extended market that was better than ever! We’re thrilled to see how this event has grown since 2020.

A special shoutout to Cedar Mountain Fire & Rescue for keeping us safe amidst high foot traffic along the highway. We couldn't have done it without you! It’s always a highlight to see the trucks roll out, lights flashing, knowing we’re in good hands. Thank you for always looking out for us!

Happy Holidays!

MAGHA CHAPEL SING-A-LONG by Patty Stahl

The pews were filled for the Sunday Christmas Caroling at the McGaha Chapel (1872) as the songs of the season were heard once again on the hilltop near the old Johnstone Turnpike. The Sherwood Forest Wood Cutters had cleared the trees and branches from Storm Helene that were blocking the approach to the church building. The Chapel itself stood strong throughout the storm and received no damage. The shuttle drivers, also from Sherwood Forest, were very busy delivering the carolers to the Chapel from the Robin Hood Center and some visitors chose to walk along the path. The large crowd helped to warm the primitive building as there is no other heat source in the 152-year-old structure.

Santa Claus entertained us with a surprise visit and elf jokes to the delight of the children and adults alike. Beth Lee Owings sang the Christmas favorite ‘O Holy Night’ beautifully and we all joined in on the second verse. Suzanne Lawson led us in the motions that accompany ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ as the Chambers children enjoyed helping her. Judy Barksdale is our other alto song leader, and all of the songs are sung a cappella.

A little bit of history was shared and then we traveled to the Rocky Hill Family Life Center for hot cider, coffee, and delicious homemade goodies prepared by the bakers of Sherwood Forest and Cedar Mountain.

As we ate and visited, Suzanne treated us to Christmas music played on the piano. Thanks go to all individuals and groups that made this such a delightful start to the season. This event is sponsored by the

Sherwood Forest Friends, the Transylvania County Historical Society and the Cedar Mountain Community. We look forward to seeing you again on Saturday, June 7th, 2025, when we will gather to sing 150-year-old songs and enjoy watermelon on the grounds.

AROUND THE HOUSE BY Linda Packer Young

We attended the McGaha Chapel Sing-a-long and when it was over we were told that shuttle cars were waiting outside to return us to the Sherwood Forest Red Barn parking lot.  So we hurried to a car and started to get in the back seat.  It was a big surprise for the driver who wasn’t a shuttle driver.  We apologized and started to get out but she said “No” and that she would take us back to our car.  I don’t recall her name, but thanks so much for the unexpected shuttle service.  We appreciated it.
