CEDAR MOUNTAIN CANTEEN
AFRO-LATIN JAZZ WORKSHOP AND PERFORMANCE
On Saturday, March 8th, the Cedar Mountain Canteen is hosting Grupo los Santos, a NYC-based funky, rootsy, weirdly eclectic jam-band which pulls equally from the traditions of jazz, rock, funk, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, and whatever else they come across. A free workshop will be conducted by the group from 4 - 5:30 pm. All musicians and tap dancers are welcome. At 6:30 pm the group will perform for the public. All are welcome and the show is free (it is being sponsored by members of our community.) An RSVP is appreciated if you would like to attend the workshop and/or performance. Email cedarmountaincanteenmusic@gmail.com. Thank you! Kim Coram
PANCAKE BREAKFAST
The Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue Department Auxiliary will be hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser on Saturday March 15th from 8am – 11.00am. There will be pancakes, sausage (both turkey and pork) maple and blueberry syrup, juices and coffee. We hope to have a supply of T-Shirts available. Donations will benefit the Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue Dept. and will be used for needed equipment.
TRANSYLVANIA SHARES SHARING CLUB
March 22 @ 4:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Join the Cedar Mountain Canteen Employee-owned cooperative, Transylvania Shares sharing club, a NC non-profit and other members of our community as we share a potluck meal, swap seeds, prepare the Canteen food forest for another season of food production, and enjoy conversations, storytelling and community.
We learned a lot from Hurricane Helene, and we are putting our lessons into action in support of a stronger community. Please bring food to share if you are able. If not, we would love to feed you. This is a zero-waste event, and we ask that you bring your own reusable place setting. Please bring nothing disposable! Transylvania Shares will have some of its inventory present if you need to borrow a place setting. Dish washing and compost facilities are available.
Everyone is welcome! We love diversity and celebrate the strength it brings. Let us know if you would like to help! Start gathering your seeds, trees, and plants to share. We look forward to enjoying time together in solidarity.
BLOOD DRIVE
A blood drive will be held on Saturday, April 12th from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue Department at 8725 Cascade Lake Road in downtown Cedar Mountain. To make an appointment to give blood, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Some drives may accept walk-ins, but they may have longer wait times. Blood drives are held every 6 weeks.
BBQ
The Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue Dept. Auxiliary has also scheduled the annual BBQ on Saturday May 24th. Don’t miss this. Mark your calendars now.
AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young, Correspondent
Our crocuses are in bloom. They have bloomed in Brevard already but at 3,000 ft elevation nature is a little slower. Our winter has been mild compared to what has happened in the Northeast and other areas, and we are very thankful for that.
I spent the first 19 years of my life, in Iowa before moving to Chicago. Winter storms in both areas could be brutal. I remember monumental drifts at our home in Iowa. My dad had to dig a tunnel through a snow drift from the back door to the garage.
When we moved to NC, in 1995 we certainly did not expect hurricanes to be an issue in the mountains. Now forest fires are a worry. We still wouldn't live anywhere else. Our log home on Duncan Mountain in Cedar Mountain is our forever home.
