REFORESTATION OF THE 276 CORRIDOR submitted by Al Brothers

In four years the traffic count along 276 has more than doubled. That number is set to increase exponentially as the Cedar Mountain community begins to develop housing and business destinations drawing from Brevard.  Traffic noise and pollution along the 276 corridor is starting to take its toll against the rural ecology of once scenic and quiet trail through a rainforest.  Sherwood Forest occupies a significant footprint along the 276 corridor.  Our role as conservators gives us an opportunity to lead by example in demonstrating how best practices can help protect the unique environment that 276 traverses.

The quality of Sherwood Forest golf, villas and condominiums are the first to be impacted by the increased traffic and noise from 276. Golfers experience increasing sudden and loud distractions as nearby residents

are increasingly disturbed at all hours. The Villas Association proposes to join with the Golf Committee,

Landscape Committee and Condominium Association to initiate a REFORESTATION PROGRAM along the Sherwood Forest property adjacent to 276. The purpose of the program would be:

1. To visually demonstrate to neighbors the importance of maintaining a forested canopy as part of the mountain ecology. After all “Forest” is in our name.

2. To provide a buffer from visual and sound disturbance impacting the Sherwood Forest quality of life.

3. To offset the loss of canopy from recent deforestation along 276.

4. We advocate placing a forested buffer extending from the golf maintenance shed to the garden. We seek approval, design and funding to proceed as timing, funding and expertise appear to be available.

It is hoped that funding from grants now on the books can be directed for application to this project. Other commitments would come from new grants as well as donations. We advocate that a short term planting plan be initiated to take advantage of the coming planting season to be followed up by a longer term plan to complete the program. Leadership would depend heavily upon the expertise of the Landscape and Grounds group as well as the Golf Committee. Other stakeholders would be the Villas, Condominiums and Arboretum Committees. Inspiration for this idea comes from observing how our mountain rainforest ecology deserves leadership by example. Any and all comments are welcomed.

AROUND THE HOUSE by Linda Packer Young

I was happy to learn my neighbor, Eric, reads the Cedar Mountain News, especially AROUND THE HOUSE.  I had mentioned my worry about bears in the yard after finally seeing one after living here since 1995.  Oh, we had evidence; being city dwellers in Northern Illinois before coming here, we only worried about raccoons getting into the garbage there.  Our first bear experience here consisted of hauling trash and trash cans out of the woods where the bear(s) had dragged them.  I was pleased and surprised to see Eric when he showed up at our door with a Signal Horn bear blaster.  Thanks for your thoughtfulness, Eric.  I feel much safer now.

Note:  The deadline to submit articles for the news is Monday night.  If you think your contribution will be later than that you need to let me know.  Email cedarmountainnews@gmail.com with all news.  Photos need to be 900kb or more to be used in the paper.
