It’s certainly looking like an early fall. The leaves are coming down fast in the rain today. I love fall and the smell of the drying leaves. The fall colors are so warming to the eye too.
I wrote the following in 1995, the first fall I lived here.
Fall in North Carolina by Linda Packer Young
The misty fog retreats as the sun pushes away the night.
Tranquil darkness persists, Hesitant to relinquish its hold.
Birds begin their chorus, heralding the coming of the day.
While colorful leaves cling tenaciously to branch tips- awaiting departure.
They begin their breezy decent, dancing on the wind as they settle, uneasily.
Gently they carpet the earth in vibrant shades of crimson, orange and gold.
The breeze quickens, stirring the leaves, whispering of cool days to come.
Nightfall finds me curled in front of the fireplace.
In silent, pensive, reverie, I stare into the crackling flames
reflecting on a glorious fall day contemplating a winter soon to come.
